Community Service: Giving of Your Time, Talents and/or Treasures

By Ann Giacobbi

In 1994, I had the privilege of meeting former WTAE-TV meteorologist Joe DeNardo at the Pittsburgh Italian Scholarship Fund Dinner, where he was recognized as their Italian-American Man of the Year. In his acceptance comments, Mr. DeNardo said something that struck me, and its truth has stuck with me over the years… “Much is expected from those to whom much has been given.”

This sentiment manifests itself often in the words and actions of those, who like Mr. DeNardo, have made a difference in our local community and beyond. Take for instance Mr. DeNardo’s years of involvement in Project Bundle-Up, former Pittsburgh Pirate Freddy Sanchez and his wife Alissa’s $50,000 donation toward the construction of the first Miracle League field in Southwestern PA or most recently the sisters who cared for Haitian orphans and eventually brought them to the United States safely. Good works, however, don’t have to be on that scale to make a difference. There are many opportunities to “give back” here at home. One can visit an elderly neighbor, organize a team for a fundraising walk, volunteer as a coach or mentor, serve on a board, send care packages to our troops or donate to the local food bank or library, just to name a few.

In today’s world, we are often made aware of the vast and enormous needs of many, and it may seem that one person can’t possibly make a difference. However, if we each give of our time, talents and/or treasures, the magnitude of our gift won’t be measured in hours or dollars, but rather in the hope others receive. While much is expected, that which you receive in return will be infinitely greater.
