During a regulatory briefing at the recent American Trucking Association Management Conference and Exhibition, it was mentioned that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) would unlikely complete its final hours-of-service rule by October 28, 2011, a U.S. Court-imposed deadline. They were correct. On Friday, October 28, the FMCSA requested, and obtained approval for, an extension.

Proposed changes include reducing driving hours from 11 to 10 and modifying the current rule’s 34-hour restart provision by requiring that it include two rest periods of at least 6 hours and mandating that the hours fall between midnight and 6:00 a.m. and that the rest period may be used only once per week. These proposed changes were the result of a settlement that FMCSA reached with advocacy groups.

FMSCA is expected to file its next status report on November 28.
