Giant Eagle, Inc. has purchased 10 new Volvo heavy-duty compressed natural gas (“CNH”) powered delivery trucks, which the company estimates will save 100,000 gallons of diesel fuel during their first year in operation.

These vehicles were designed and built by EQT Energy Corporation in partnership with Volvo Trucks North America. The first-of-their-kind vehicles have an 8.9-liter Cummins engine with the necessary level of power to navigate hilly and mountainous terrain.

Compressed natural gas is sold in gasoline gallon equivalents (GGEs), with each GGE having the same energy content as a gallon of gasoline. Vehicles using compressed natural gas typically have similar fuel economy, but with much lower pollution emissions than standard gasoline or diesel vehicles.

EQT Corporation and Giant Eagle, Inc. both plan to open compressed natural gas fueling stations in the Pittsburgh area in July 2011, which will be open to the public.
