Information Security and Assurance as an IT Audit Intern

From my first accounting class in college, the importance of internships was made very clear. Internships are a great way to gain insight into a company and build on what you have been taught in school. Getting a summer internship was my number-one priority going into my senior year at Robert Morris University. I could not have asked for a better internship experience than what I have had at Schneider Downs this summer.

I went into the first interview, on campus, trying to get an internship in the Audit Department at Schneider Downs. The interview was more of a discussion rather than an interview, and this immediately helped to calm any nerves that I had before the interview started. During that interview, Tom Harvey, the Director of HR at the firm, started to tell me about the IT Audit Department at Schneider Downs. I did not know that Schneider Downs had an IT Audit Department, and I was anxious to learn more about it because it fit well with my major of accounting and my master’s in Information Security and Assurance. I was thrilled that I received a call for a second interview at Schneider Downs’ office. Even though I was really nervous, the interview went really well. I was able to meet with people from the IT Audit Department and learn more about the type of work that they did. I was very excited to accept an internship offer from Schneider Downs and could not wait to get started in the summer.

The internship at Schneider Downs has been a great learning experience. Going into the first interview, I never thought that I would come away with an internship in the field that I am getting my master’s degree in. I was not only able to do IT auditing, but I was also able to learn the different types of processes behind the work I was doing. Everybody at the firm is really knowledgeable and willing to help, no matter what you are doing. I was able to work on different types of reports/audits and meet with different clients during my time at Schneider Downs. The people at Schneider Downs are great, and I am very happy that I was able to be a part of the firm. My internship at Schneider Downs has taught me so much, and I want to thank everyone at Schneider Downs for the opportunity.
