On December 16, 2011, the Carpenters Training Center graciously opened its doors to Schneider Downs & Co.’s annual construction continuing professional education seminar. Schneider Downs’ Construction Focus Group conducts this annual internal CPE event to provide its professional staff with industry-specific training and education encompassing the most recent accounting, auditing, tax and construction industry trends.
This year’s seminar included a presentation from Ray Vogel, the Center’s Training Director, and Rich Okraszewski, the Center’s Apprentice Training Coordinator, and a tour of the 93,000-square-foot facility. The Training Center, a Mosites Construction-built facility that opened in early 2010, houses classrooms and training space that educates approximately 1,000 apprentices and journeymen in commercial, residential, heavy and highway carpenter, mill cabinet, millwright, piledriver and floor coverer crafts. Many training classes were in session during the seminar, enabling attendees to view live instruction in welding, framing and other carpentry-related skills.
Following the presentation and tour, the CPE participants returned to the Training Center’s 150-seat auditorium for the half-day education, which included presentations from members of Schneider Downs’ Construction Focus Group and others on a variety of construction-related topics. Those topics included updates from the AICPA National Construction Industry Conference (provided by attendees of the national conference held in December 2011 in Las Vegas), sessions on auditing estimates, claims and change orders and updates on the FASB-IASB Joint Project on Revenue Recognition (a revised Exposure Draft was issued in November 2011). Additionally, a presentation on Building Information Modeling (BIM) was given, which included a video of the powerful processes and tools that are changing the face of the construction industry. A tax session closed out the seminar, and included industry matters surrounding hiring credits, cancellation of debt, real estate professional election and undeveloped land and improvements abandonment.
