As someone who relies on technology, I’ve found that I’ve become increasingly dependent on cell phone applications to assist me with everyday tasks. Whether it’s finding a nearby restaurant, figuring out what clothes to pack for a business trip or checking the score of a game, I’ve got an app for that. This realization got me thinking about applications that could benefit my nonprofit clients.
As I researched applications that could be utilized by nonprofit clients, I realized that there were far too many to try and write about in a single Insight article for the website. Instead, I’ve decided to write about a single application on a quarterly basis. The first application that I believe could be of benefit to a number of nonprofit organizations is VolunteerMatch.
On its website, VolunteerMatch describes itself as a “volunteer engagement network.” At its core, VolunteerMatch pairs organizations looking for volunteers with volunteers within the community. From the organizational standpoint, you can post volunteering opportunities and track responses. From a volunteer’s standpoint, the application allows you to search for volunteering opportunities by distance from your current location, date the original opportunity was posted and the date of the event. The application has an advanced search capability that will allow volunteers to more narrowly search for opportunities based upon categories (i.e., arts & humanities, hunger or seniors), keywords or specific event dates.
If you think that this application may benefit your organization, you can find out more about VolunteerMatch.
If you know of an application that would benefit nonprofit organizations that you would like me to consider for a future article, please email me at parmknecht@schneiderdowns.com.
