My Internship Experience

Before starting my internship with Schneider Downs, saying I was nervous would be an understatement. I had not taken any auditing classes, and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. During the first week of training, we were given so much information I never thought that I would be able to retain it all. During my second week, I was on my first job and I was just as nervous as before. I felt like I knew more about auditing than I the pervious week, but still not quite enough to be at a client’s business auditing its 401k Plan! I learned very quickly that this is the type of job that you learn as you go, and you can’t be afraid to ask questions. The seniors that I was working with were both very helpful and knowledgeable. I made sure to keep a list of questions to ask more at one time, rather than just one here and one there. A week later, my first job was complete and I could not even believe how much I had learned in just those three days at the client’s location.

A few weeks later, I had some free time in my schedule, and I was able to get some experience with preparing returns. When I first started learning about the tax software and everything it took to complete a return, I thought, “Man, what did I get myself into, I should have just stuck with audit, where I’m comfortable.” That’s right, in just a few short weeks, I felt comfortable with audit. But, in just another week, I would feel much more comfortable with tax!

The main thing to realize before starting an internship in accounting is that it’s okay to be nervous and feel like you have no idea what to do – you’ll learn. Everyone at Schneider Downs is so helpful and understanding – you just can’t be afraid to ask questions. It’s important to go in with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn, because I’ve learned so much in just two months. It’s been a great experience, and I’m definitely going to miss it come August 15.
