My Path to Schneider Downs

Three years ago, if someone had told me I would be an Audit Intern at the fourth-largest accounting firm in Pittsburgh, I would have laughed out loud. I entered my freshman year of college at the University of Pittsburgh as a Psychology major, with the ultimate goal of receiving a graduate degree and working in Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Oakland. After that first year, however, I found myself unsure about the path I had chosen. In the bleak job market that students face today, I decided that business school was a much more sound choice.

I transferred to the business school in my sophomore year, but initially I had no idea which subject I wanted to major in. I started attending recruiting events, though, and I realized I needed something on my resume, even if I wasn’t 100% sure of it. I made my decision based on my favorite class at the time: accounting. When I learned about the 150 credit hour requirement to sit for the CPA exam, I picked up a second major in order to reach the number of credits I needed. I chose Human Resources, which was the closest thing to Psychology that was offered in the business school. In the end, both majors turned out to be exactly the right choices for me. I spent the following two years working hard at both, and eventually secured an internship with Schneider Downs.

My internship has challenged me to use all the skills I developed throughout my education, and has been an incredibly rewarding experience. One thing in particular that I’ve enjoyed is the personal interaction that the auditing profession provides. I’ve learned that the stereotypical image of an accountant being reserved and dull is completely unfounded; auditors must have strong people skills in order to interact effectively with their clients. Throughout the internship, I’ve had the opportunity to interact with people on a daily basis, which is what I really wanted out of psychology. Furthermore, the people of Schneider Downs are incredibly friendly and it has been a pleasure working with them this summer. Schneider Downs has given me a terrific start to my career, and I can’t wait to continue along my path.
