A Few Reminders from the DOL on Appropriate Plan Operations

Often, some of the most helpful tools can be hiding in plain sight! The United States Department of Labor has an informative Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page, which gives plan administrators answers to basic questions about retirement plans and ERISA. While this FAQ won’t replace consultations with a qualified ERISA counsel for more complex matters, it is an excellent resource for both new and experienced plan administrators to make sure your plan is covering all of the required basics.

The topics range from the different types of retirement plans, different types of fiduciaries, prohibited transactions and the plan administrator’s role in monitoring service providers.  The DOL provides brief plain-English discussions on these topics to assist you in ensuring that your plan continues to be compliant with the DOL’s rules and regulations.

The FAQ page also provides direct links to some other topics that may apply to your plan, such as small business issues, understanding fees, auto-enrollment for 401(k) plans for small businesses, profit sharing plans for small business and retirement plan correction programs.

This is a great resource that every plan administrator should have bookmarked as a quick reference to consult during your daily processing of plan transactions.  Access the the FAQ page about Retirement Plans and ERISA on the DOL's website.  In addition to this resource, Schneider Downs has a dedicated team of advisors through our SD Retirement Plan Solutions Group which can assist with all types of questions and scenarios involving your company’s retirement plan.  Contact us with questions.
