In college, there were times that it would have been easier for me to sit back and coast through my days there, but I am so glad that I didn’t do that. Going out of my comfort zone and taking chances, even with things that seemed small at the time, led to opportunities that would have otherwise passed right by me. One of these opportunities was being selected for an interview with Schneider Downs. As a result of my hard work at school, I was lucky enough to receive an offer for an internship with the firm afterwards.
Going into this internship, all of my expectations were based off of what I’ve been told from teachers and other students throughout college. I quickly realized that my experience was going to be unique and rewarding in more ways than I had imagined. I think one of the most important lessons I learned during this internship is that you have to be open to new experiences in order to get the most out of any situation. I had not been expecting to start my internship in the tax department, but after a few days of working with the staff, I realized that working in tax was more interesting than I had assumed. I could see myself doing this work in the future. I had originally been so focused on what to expect in the audit department that I hadn’t even considered what I could learn working in tax. If I wouldn’t have been placed in the tax department, I would have missed out on a great experience, and I would have never realized how much I enjoy the work. Now that I have spent time in both departments, I know that deciding which path I want to follow isn’t such an easy choice.
Moving forward, I am going to try to take advantage of every opportunity presented to me. You can never know the outcome of any situation until you actually experience it firsthand. I am so happy with my time spent at Schneider Downs, and I truly don’t think I would have been able to have such a well-rounded experience anywhere else.
