Growing up, I had always set goals for myself that I would work hard to accomplish, whether it was making the varsity basketball team or earning an A on my next essay. I was only in sixth grade when I knew I wanted to attend Penn State. Check. Going into twelfth grade, I told myself that I would do whatever it takes to be accepted into the Integrated Masters of Accounting program at Penn State. Check. Now, I can checkoff my goal of interning at a public accounting firm, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience than the one that I have had at Schneider Downs.
My Schneider Downs internship has benefited me in three ways. First, it has provided me valuable experience as an external auditor that I could never have learned in the classroom. I was able to work on different types of audits for clients in different kinds of industry. With each audit, I learned more, and I truly felt as if I was contributing to my engagement team. Second, it has given me the opportunity to improve my people skills and has allowed me to further gain confidence in myself. On a daily basis, I interacted with peers, clients, and managers. I believe that having people skills is a necessary trait when pursuing a career in business. I know this experience will continue to benefit me for years to come. Lastly, I got to meet and work with great people who were not only talented, but also eager to help. Everyone at Schneider Downs was welcoming and more than willing to help me learn. I never once felt intimidated to ask a question. Oh wait, there is a forth benefit to this internship. Out of necessity, I learned to merge and drive on a highway.
