OUR THOUGHTS ON:

What Being a Marketing Intern at an Accounting Firm is All About

Internship|Marketing

By Carrie Marks

Being a marketing major, I wasn’t aware that there were many opportunities for my major in a public accounting firm. When I talked to Schneider Downs at the Ohio State Fisher Career Fair in the spring, I was instantly impressed. I was told about the many experiences I would receive from a summer internship with Schneider Downs- from becoming proficient in the company’s client database, to assisting with event planning. After interviewing, I became even more excited at the prospect of having a marketing internship with Schneider Downs.

After I accepted an offer for an internship and the summer began, I jumped right into work at Schneider Downs. In my first week I had already learned so much. Having never been exposed to a public accounting firm before, I wasn’t sure how a firm such as Schneider Downs would utilize a marketing team. I soon realized it was a crucial part of their firm. The marketing team works closely with the other departments in the firm, and I was able to experience the other aspects of the firm as well.

Partway through my summer internship, a member of the marketing team left Schneider Downs. Because of this, I was able to take on more responsibilities and experience even more of the marketing efforts of Schneider Downs. I began using software for projects that many marketing professionals use, and I also started taking on tasks that I knew I would come across in future jobs. Gaining experience like this from Schneider Downs was much more than I expected from a summer internship and more than I could have asked for. I now know that marketing plays a great role in industries you wouldn’t normally realize, such as public accounting.
