My Seven Month Internship

Going in to my senior year at Ohio State, I had zero experience in the accounting field outside of the classes I had taken up to that point. I knew my odds of getting a job straight out of college with no experience were significantly lower than if I could just get some sort of internship. I came up with two options: try and get a winter internship and graduate a semester later than I had planned, or get a summer internship and go to graduate school. The idea of another full year of school after graduating didn’t appeal to me very much at all, so I chose to try for a winter internship. As the fall recruiting season got going, that was my goal, and after going through the entire career fair and interview process, I ended up accepting an internship with Schneider Downs.

My internship started in January, just in time to get thrown right into busy season. As a student, I hadn’t even taken my audit course yet, so I had no idea what to expect, and very little idea of what I was getting myself in to. Obviously, I’m not the first intern Schneider Downs has had, so my coworkers knew the sections that I would be able to handle and learn the most from. The long hours of work and the travel sure did make time fly by. Before I knew it, it was the middle of March and I had to decide what I wanted to do with my summer. I liked it here a lot, so I asked if I could continue to intern here. After some deliberation it was decided that my internship would be extended, and I would stay through the end of July.

This past academic year was the first year that Ohio State had been on semesters rather than quarters, so the usual winter internship for a student from Ohio State only lasted through the middle of March. Here I was at the end of busy season just over half-way through my internship. My summer schedule wasn’t filled with many engagements, so I spent a lot of time getting to learn the more administrative side of the audit, lots of engagement letters and sample picking. But I also got to work on some projects that weren’t in the usual audit engagement.

So here I am, writing this as my internship comes to a close, one semester of classes left before I will start back here in January. To reflect back on all the things I have learned in the past seven months would take far too long for this reflection. The ability to work through a busy season was very beneficial as I know for the most part what to expect for the busiest time of the year, and I know this extended internship will prove very valuable when I do come back. I have appreciated the opportunity Schneider Downs has given me and I look forward to starting as a staff.
