OUR THOUGHTS ON:

The Schneider Downs Internship Experience

Internship

By Sean Battle

In the business world, up until recently, the first job is thought by many to be the most important; it can make or break a career. But in the last few decades, I believe that there has been a new requirement with rising importance for young business professionals: Experience. Every interviewer of a recent college graduate looks at two things: GPA and experience. Experience comes from the many internships that today’s business world provides.  But there are so many internships and an internship has become akin to a first job.  With many choices for internships, it is often hard to pick one that will actually benefit a career.

Accounting Firm Internship

Every college student has heard of the summers spent stapling or making coffee, while not learning anything that can help them get that crucial experience for a first job. What young professionals often don’t hear enough about are the internships at Schneider Downs. Schneider Downs recognizes the fact that these interns are going to be future employees, clients or competition. Therefore, Schneider Downs trains these mere interns to do more than the average employee. They allow these summer workers to join other employees on jobs as if they were full-time employees themselves; to meet clients, to make relationships, and most importantly, to learn.

I can tell the changes this experience has already brought to me, but I asked myself the other day: how it is Schneider Downs can bring about this kind of experience and so many other companies cannot? The realization came about while I was at a client’s office with several full-time employees. The atmosphere these employees and every other employee of Schneider Downs bring to the job every day is why this internship and place of work is so different than every other. The atmosphere exudes professionalism, helpfulness and a desire to excel. They throw us interns into the thick of the work, but at the same time, they will go out of their way to help us understand a procedure or problem. They do this while expecting us to bring the same professionalism and desire to excel that they bring to work every day. These expectations allow young professionals like me to try and better ourselves by rising to the expectations of Schneider Downs.

The actions and personalities the Schneider Downs employees bring with them every day helps to breed the future work force of today’s society.  This is not just a view of how Schneider Downs brings a great experience to their interns, but a view of how these men and women conduct themselves every single day whether it is with a client, friends or family. This in turn allows Schneider Downs to affect their environment in a great way, as shown through things like the active focus on volunteerism or just the personal focus on a business or individual. In the end, every person or business that is not associated with Schneider Downs and their employees is missing out on a great business and great people.
