OUR THOUGHTS ON:

Turning Over a New Leaf

Internship

By Emily Schumacher

At the end of August I will begin my final semester of college and be anxiously awaiting graduation in December.  As graduation moves closer and closer, I’ve had a mixture of feelings between excitement, nervousness, and a little bit of sadness. School has become somewhat of a comfort zone; it’s the routine job I go back to every August through May with a summer break in-between. In a few short months, I’ll be leaving that comfort zone. Although I’m excited to finally be in the “real world,” I know I’ll be experiencing new responsibilities and a new routine that will be different from what I’ve become so accustomed to.

As I began my search for an internship for this summer, I hoped that I would be able to gain a little bit of insight into what this new world would be like and get a head start on adjusting to life after graduation. So, when I received my acceptance letter from Schneider Downs, I couldn’t wait to begin a summer of new experiences.

Now, with only a few weeks left at Schneider Downs, I’m not sure why I had been so nervous. This opportunity has brought so many great experiences that I know will stick with me as I move forward after graduation.  Since the first day on the job, I’ve felt welcomed in the Schneider Downs community. Everyone I’ve had the opportunity to work and interact with has been nothing but kind, helpful, and happy to answer any questions. This type of atmosphere definitely put my nerves at ease when starting out.

I’ve enjoyed being able to take the skills I’ve learned so far from school and apply them to real situations. Being able to finally see how a process works, or why this item ties to another, has taught me so much more about accounting than a classroom can. From my experiences this summer, I’ve enjoyed the interaction with clients and colleagues that public accounting provides. People always have the idea that accountants are quiet and boring, but my time here at Schneider Downs has taught me that is definitely not true. Through this internship, I’ve learned so much about public accounting, teamwork, client interaction, and much more. I’ve had the opportunity to experience what the “real world” is like and what being a professional is all about.

So, as I look forward to graduation and this next chapter in my life, I can gladly say that Schneider Downs has allowed me to feel well-prepared and confident about what my future holds. My time here has taught me so much, and I know I’ll be prepared to face a life of new challenges and experiences as I start my career. Those nerves I once felt just thinking about graduation have turned into anxious excitement as I look towards the future. Thank you to everyone who has had a part in making this internship memorable, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.
