Learning Tax

As an accounting major, I’ve always enjoyed my classes, but still felt there was a disconnect between what I was learning and how things were in ‘the real world.’  For this reason, I could not wait to have internship experience after my junior year.  I’m grateful that I have been given this opportunity at Schneider Downs, and so far it has proven to be everything I wanted it to be.

Working at a public accounting firm has been a powerful learning experience.  I didn’t fully understand before, but I now see the benefits.   Every client and industry has different needs and different protocol to follow, which means exposure to different tax laws and practices.  A client could be a corporation, a partnership, or an individual, just to name a few, and each type offers a possible new opportunity to learn.  Public accounting is a challenging field, but it is an interesting challenge worth pursuing.  In addition to my exposure to the public accounting world, I’m very thankful to have been in the tax department.  I am constantly inspired and amazed by all the bright and talented individuals in the tax department, and hope to have as much knowledge as them some day.  I understand that tax is not for everyone, but taxes are much more exciting than you would think.  Having this internship has taught me so much more than just the technical side of taxes; it has given me broad knowledge of tax and business, and more importantly, I feel that working in a public accounting firm has made a lot of ideas ‘click’ for me.  There are just some things that you have to learn through experience and interaction.

Not only was I lucky enough to have this internship in public accounting, but I was also lucky to have an internship with this outstanding firm.  Even a friend of mine who is not in the accounting field has heard of Schneider Downs and congratulated me on my internship by saying “Schneider Downs! They’re a really big deal!” Over the past two months, Schneider Downs has proved to be a dynamic company through its people and culture.  I can’t thank the employees here enough for taking time and effort out of their day to interact with the interns and provide us with tasks and projects to complete.  Even the smallest projects have helped me see what all goes into a return and helped me see the bigger picture of tax preparation.
