OUR THOUGHTS ON:

The Power of Giving One Hour of Time

By Amy Kletch

When one thinks of giving, donations of money and other material goods come to mind first.  There is another aspect of giving, which is equally important, and that is the gift of time.  As a professional working mother, time is scarce and valuable, but I wanted to participate in helping others.

With that in mind, a group of Schneider Downs’ employees participated in a networking event at the Pittsburgh YWCA for the United Way Women’s Leadership Council’s Day of Caring. At the luncheon, professionals from various industries sat down to talk to women who were trying to improve their current situations.  The women were very interested in hearing how I was able to get to where I am today and what steps it took to get there.  I found their stories equally inspiring and admire their courage to take steps to improve their lives and lives of family members.

In just one lunch hour, I was able to see the effects that mentoring had on these women.  The gift of time through volunteering can have a profound effect on all individuals and foster relationships that can last a lifetime.

What can you accomplish in one hour?
