The IRS recently announced that a questionnaire has been issued by the Exempt Organization Division to a sample of randomly selected tax-exempt organizations. The recipient organizations are all Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3) organizations that reported gross receipts of less than $200,000 and assets of less than $500,000 on their Forms 990 or 990EZ in tax year 2009. All tax-exempt organizations that filed Form 990-N (e-postcard) in tax year 2009 were included in the sample.
The questionnaire requests tax-exempt organizations to evaluate one of three different methods that the IRS may use to communicate tax developments and education. The selected tax-exempt organizations will receive a sample outreach webpage to review followed by an online survey to evaluate the effectiveness of the tool.
The IRS is evaluating processes that small, tax-exempt organizations use to obtain information about tax compliance, and is requesting feedback from small tax-exempts regarding information that might assist the organization’s compliance efforts, as well as how the IRS might effectively disseminate important information.
