TaxAct, one of the biggest providers of do-it-yourself software, recently released an online form for tax-exempt organizations. All organizations exempt from income tax such as charities, nonexempt charitable trusts and nonprofits are now able to affordably file a Form 990 using TaxAct Tax-Exempt Organizations Edition. This is the first federal Form 990 online product offered by a major tax software provider.
Smaller nonprofit organizations, those with income under $500,000, who used Urban Institute’s e-file version of the Form 990 to submit their information to the IRS now have another filing alternative. TaxAct uses a Q&A format to help filing organizations complete required forms. It alerts the users of any errors or omissions, e-files returns for free and offers 24/7 technical support. This appears to be a helpful resource for small tax-exempt organizations with small compliance budgets.
