Student Membership in Professional Organizations

Risk Advisory/Internal Audit

By Ann Giacobbi

Don’t Underestimate the Value of Live, Personal Interaction

With all of the electronic media geared toward networking (e.g., Linked In, Facebook, Twitter, etc.), society appears to be moving away from networking via live, personal interaction; however, in your job search and career development, don’t underestimate the value of a good, old-fashioned face-to-face meeting.

Professional organizations such as the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) and Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), just to name a few, allow students to join their organizations at reduced rates. By joining, students gain access to many of the same benefits as regular professional members, including career resources, education and networking opportunities.

Becoming involved in professional organizations and attending meetings can provide a competitive advantage in the job market, since it provides the opportunity for you to meet potential employers and begin to build your professional network. Attending an IIA meeting when I was a student helped lead to an internship, which eventually resulted in full-time employment. So the next time you receive a professional organization flyer in the mail, think twice before you toss it. Joining and getting involved just might be the difference that helps you to land your dream job.
