It has officially been four weeks of my internship here at Schneider Downs. I believe I have learned more in these few short weeks than I ever could sitting in a classroom. I was told that I would be participating in actual audits with clients, and that scared me. Sitting at orientation, hearing talk of binders, testing, audit programs, and walkthroughs did not make sense to me. However, I learned very quickly while on engagements what each of those terms means.
During the past few weeks, I have learned what a binder is and how to complete various types of testing. I have met numerous people at Schneider Downs, so many that it would be very difficult to remember all of their names. However, what I do remember is that every single person I have met has gone out of his or her way to help me along my journey as an intern. Everyone said that there was no such thing as too many questions, but being nervous and intimidated I doubted that. Nonetheless, I choked up the courage to ask questions, and once I did, I never once regretted it. No question was too simple, and even if I messed up, it was okay to ask questions about how I should go about fixing it.
I have learned more than just what an audit is and how to complete one. I have learned about the CPA exam process and advice on how and when to complete it. I have learned about the public accounting career path firsthand from people who work in the field. I have learned about the professional world and how to interact with clients. Most importantly, I have learned that I made the right decision to pursue a degree in accounting.
As I return to Saint Vincent College in the fall, I am excited to finish out my senior year and earn my degree. I feel confident that my time at Saint Vincent was worth it and that I will be able to put my degree to good use. I feel thankful that I was given the opportunity to intern at Schneider Downs. This internship has reassured my decision to go into accounting and, furthermore, taught me so many valuable lessons not only about accounting, but about being a professional as well.
