From Batman to an Accountant - My Path to Schneider Downs

Growing up, everyone had a dream job. Think way back to the good old days when you had no responsibilities and your mom did everything for you; what would you want to be? I guarantee no one said to be an accountant.   I sure know I didn’t. I wanted to be Batman. Being a billionaire who saves the city and always has fun gadgets to play with sounded pretty awesome. But as you grow up, the dreams of becoming a superhero, professional athlete or whatever you chose slowly get crushed and you’re forced to choose something more realistic.

Many of us go to college trying to figure out want we want to do for the next 40 years. My dad told me in my freshman year, “You better find something you like, 40 years is a long time to be unhappy.” With that in mind the pressure was on to find something. I never thought in a million years I would choose accounting. Growing up, I always had that typical stereotype that accountants sit in little cubicles and crunch numbers all day long. Now, that sounded terrible to me!

Going to a liberal arts college, I was required to take a bunch of classes that satisfied my school’s general education requirements. Scheduling classes for my spring semester freshman year, I was in the last group to pick classes, and all of the classes I wanted were already filled. I picked an accounting class just to fill my schedule, and it satisfied a general education credit.  I went into the class thinking it would be boring and hoped it wasn’t hard and that the teacher didn’t load me up with a lot work. As the semester went along, I found myself enjoying the class more and more, and I realized the stereotype I had of accountants was completely wrong.  My attitude from starting the class to finishing the class was completely different. I found the class a lot of fun, and I started taking more accounting classes to the point where I decided to major in it.

After accepting Schneider Downs’s internship position, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I have never had real-world accounting experience. All the accounting experience I have had was class and booked-based. Everything I was learning was heavy on theory and concepts; we never did anything real-life based. After this two-month internship, I can truly say this is the right career path for me. I found the work challenging but fun at the same time. Everyone I worked with really took the time to teach me auditing concepts. They didn’t just show me the work I would be doing; they took the time to explain theory behind what I was doing and why Schneider Downs did things a certain way. They really made it easy to connect what I learned in the classroom to the jobs I was doing every day.  The whole internship was very educational and really showed me this is something I could do for the next 40 years and really enjoy. Who knew a kid who wanted to be Batman would end up choosing accounting. You never know where life will take you!
