Not-For-Profit Tax

PRIMARY CONTACT: Susan M. Kirsch CPA, JD

Schneider Downs' experience with the not-for-profit sector allows us to bring insight to organizations and to better understand the unique challenges and opportunities that not-for-profits face.

Our mission is working together every day to make our firm, clients, and communities better. We recognize the importance and value of the services that not-for-profit organizations provide to our communities and are committed to serving our clients to their highest levels of satisfaction.

Our Exempt Organization Tax Services Group is recognized for its technical expertise and comprehensive experience in tax and business matters that affect not-for-profit organizations.  From the very beginning of an organization’s existence, we are able to assist in obtaining tax-exempt status with the Internal Revenue Service including education on the process and a collaborative preparation of the exemption request.   The required annual filings, including Form 990 and Form 990-PF, are complex documents which are open to public disclosure.  A critical component of our process when working with not-for-profit organizations includes viewing the annual filing document as an integral part of your public relations plan and ensuring the operations and accomplishments are highlighted.

In addition to the services mentioned above, the following is a sample list of services that we regularly assist not-for-profit organizations with:

  • Unrelated business income analysis both at the federal and state level
  • Foreign information filing requirement analysis
  • Board and management education
  • Analysis and preparation of foreign equivalency determinations
  • Annual conflict of interest questionnaire assistance
  • Consultation regarding employment taxes
  • Reasonable compensation analysis
  • Executive Compensation review
  • Gift planning strategies
  • State charitable solicitation registration
  • State payroll tax registration
  • Assistance with Payroll Protection Program
  • Employee Retention Credit Claims
  • Shattered Venue Operators Grant application assistance
  • Conflict of Interest best practices
  • Internal Revenue Service Audit Representation
  • Application for Federal Exempt Status
