A Look at Some Ongoing Trends in the Construction Industry

As we head into 2021, it’s time to embrace some innovative new developments under way within the construction industry.  Over the past year, there have been significant changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic that have led us to pay closer attention to sustainability and the integration of technology.  These trends are very likely to persist into next year and continue to change the industry as we know it.  According to a recent report from the Construction Helpline, three major developments will lead the charge in 2021.

First is the continuing integration of technological advances into the construction process.  As many of us saw in 2020, technology is playing a more important role in the everyday workplace than ever before.  The construction industry is now moving beyond inferior software and light business models to more recently developed technology like drones and 3D printers, which can be used to take aerial photographs and videos of the landscape while also monitoring security risks, and 3D printers, which can help make the industry significantly safer with flexible design prototypes while maintaining extremely high quality, detail and integrity.

Next, are trends that lean towards increased focus on structural stability.  Throughout the country, facilities are being redeveloped at an extremely high rate with sustainable construction as a focal point, often referred to as “green building” a technique to construct in an environmentally responsible and resource efficient manner.

The last major development centers around the labor force.  Job shortages continue to be a concern for the industry, thanks to, insufficient technical training and an increase in the number of young professionals looking for career paths outside of construction.  Of course, COVID-19 also had no small impact in that area as well.
